JC apparently wavered back and forth in her opinion of Judy; in her later years, she often showed a typically Crawford lack of empathy and impatience with Garland's emotional woes, financial crises, and drug addiction. (And, on some level, one can understand that position: at some point, you just want to shake someone that neurotic and unstable and say, "Get it f**king together already!") On the other hand, Crawford always openly admired Judy's talent, and when Garland had her last hurrah at the Palace in '67, JC attended one of the shows. "You have the most splendid talent," she called up from the front row during one performance. Judy did a double take, saw where the voice came from, smiled, had a spot shone down, and announced, "Ladies and gentlemen, Miss Joan Crawford."
I've read some of Crawford's comments re her frustration w/Garland's personal problems, but yes indeed she knew what a talent Judy was, and always gave her props! Looks like they're both basking a bit in each other's presence-quelle awesomeness!
Love Judy" crocheted snood!
ReplyDeleteOH, to be a fly on the wall...
