Meanwhile, Back At Doug And Mary's Shop...

The 1922 edition of  Robin Hood was actually not titled "Robin Hood".  It's official title (as stated on the post card above) was "Douglas Fairbanks In Robin Hood".  Now I'm not one to accuse Fairbanks of having a tiny sense of self importance or anything, but ego really wasn't behind this title.  The budget for this little 'ol picture was enormous, and the sets (as you can see both above and below) were the largest in film history to date.  The castle tower was 90 feet tall and the scope of the constructed village was spread over 10 acres.

With such a vast and expensive undertaking, they were taking it slow to make sure and get it right.  That being the case, Doug's concern (knowing how Hollywood worked, even by 1922) was that some other production company would rush through the filming of the Robin Hood story and beat them to release, thus causing confusion in the event that there  were 2 'Robin Hoods' in theaters.  So just to be sure there was no confusion on who was making the 'quality' version:  "Douglas Fairbanks In Robin Hood".

His efforts were as rewarded.  It's a spectacular picture and it also has the distinction of being the first motion picture to be given, what we now know of as, a Hollywood Premiere.  The first picture shown in the gorgeous Grauman's Egyptian Theater:

Quizzical Answer

Paul Williams, Danny Hutton, Stephen Stills, Rodney Bingenheimer, Bryan MacLean, Harry Nilsson and over 400 others unsuccessfully auditioned for The Monkees TV show in 1965.

Ayem8y cleverly couched his correct answer between two incorrect guess to throw me off  no doubt, and to try and keep me from declaring him today's "Smartest Boy In School!"

Now just to keep the madness going:  What role did former Monkees Mickey Dolenz and Mike Nesmith lose after the audition process in 1973?

Class?  Anyone?

Lookout.

High atop groovy Laurel Canyon in the Hollywood Hills, there is a street and a section named Lookout Mountain.  It's rather aptly named, as it turns out, and not only in the context of the spectacular vistas.  The name also works if you shift the meaning more to the kind used in the Shangri-La's epic 1964 hit "Leader Of The Pack".  You know, the part right after she begs him to go slow, she screams "lookout, Lookout, LOOKOUT!!"

On the one hand you have the rustic, unmatched beauty of a steep hillside that has been a draw to the creative and famous since the beginning of filmdom:  Clara Bow, Tom Mix, Garbo, Harry Houdini, Bessie Love.  You also have the birth of the Hippies with Vito Paulekas, Szou (his wife), Carl Orestes Franzoni (his constant sidekick) and their legion of followers.  And finally, as everybody knows, you have the birth of the Southern California 1960s rock explosion with residents, Joni Mitchell, David Crosby, Frank Zappa, Jim Morrison, Stephen Stills, The Mamas and The Papas, The Byrds, Love, Little Feat, The Lovin' Spoonful, The Association, Jackson Browne, Graham Nash, The Monkees, Van Dyke Parks, and on and on.

There were darker forces too.  Over the years there's also been a string of suspicious suicides and grizzly murders, most famous of which were Ramon Navarro and the Wonderland Murders.  And come to find out, it wasn't just young girls who were comin' to the Canyon.

Into this heady, theatrical mix of star dust, astrology and acid trips, whom do you think would be the least likely occupant to enjoy a stay of thirty years?  Could it be, dare I say, The Military/Intelligence Complex!?!?!

Originally occupied in 1941 the 2.5 acre property was used as an air defense station.  However, from 1947 until 1969 (supposedly, though some say years later), it was a secret government film studio, perhaps the world's only completely self-contained movie studio. With 100,000 square feet of floor space, the covert studio included sound stages, screening rooms, film processing labs, editing facilities, an animation department, and seventeen climate-controlled film vaults. It also had underground parking, a helicopter pad and a bomb shelter.  While operational, the studio produced some 19,000 classified motion pictures.  The facility retained as many as 250 producers, directors, technicians, editors, animators, etc., both civilian and military, all with top security clearances - and all reporting to work in a secluded corner of Laurel Canyon.  To date, only a few dozen of it's film products have been declassified.

Imagine, cold war shenannigans and Cass Elliot, Peter Fonda and Jim Morrison all happily coexisting!

Oliver Twisted

One of Felix In Hollywood's favorite glamor girls, Edna Mae Oliver, celebrates her 127th birthday today!

My affection for this 'voice of snarky reason' is so great that she was the topic of a post in my first thirty days of life here in blogland.  To re-live the glory and excitement, go here.

59 Years Ago Today...

Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner marry in the suburban Philadelphia home of Lester Sachs before 20 guests.  At the conclusion of the ceremony, after kissing his bride, Sinatra shook the officiating Judge's hand and said, "Well, we finally made it."

There Never Was A Girl Like.....

Virginia Van Upp!  Child actress, turned scenarist, turned ace screenplay writer, and finally one of the only women executives of her time in Hollywood.  She held the #2 spot at Columbia when Harry Cohn made her Head Executive Producer.

For all her extraordinary accomplishments, I am most thankful to her for presenting us with the most smoldering dame of all time:
Gilda "If I'd been a ranch, they would have called me the Bar Nothing" Mundson Farrell!

Hayworth and Ford loving their work.

So Whaddya Figure The Odds Are...

Not only a fair question to ask, but one of my all time favorite songs too.

Just For Today...

One of the most surprising, delightful, and certainly humbling aspects of my experience with this blog is that it enjoys a world-wide readership.  Last December while staring at  the "Start Your Own Blog" page, as my nervous fingers hit the 'send' button, I could never have guessed that soon people in Qatar and Tunisia, and Tajikistan would be reading what I had to say.

To my International visitors, I wish to say that I am honored by your presence and hope you enjoy what you find.  And just for today, I ask your indulgence while I specifically address the readers here in the United States.

Though I was born to live in Hollywood and have traveled the world, I did spend my childhood, adolescence and young adulthood in Washington DC, and thus, am a true blue, through and through American.

I love this country so completely, that there are times that I hate some of the things that go on here.  Like when I see the beautiful contents of this "Great Melting Pot" attempting to be put through a strainer, or when I must sadly concede that "...with Liberty and Justice for All." is really just a pretty and somewhat poetic phrase.

There is, however one thing that no matter how privileged/underprivileged you are; regardless if you are learned or an eighth grade drop-out; cannot be taken away from any of us:  our voting rights.  They were more hard won and took a lot longer for some of us than others, but we all have them now.  I can think of no more effective way to spit in the face of the pride that was felt by the huge turnout of the last election than to meet this one with a defeatist's apathy.

If you were planning to skip it this time around, please, please reconsider.

The Mystery Gets Revealed!

Personally I'm usually horrible at this game.  But over my time in blog-land, I've found that you guys are typically brilliant at the "guess who" thing.

So it's with some surprise I announce that no one guessed the identity of this sweet little girl.

She is perhaps the embodiment of the the idea that "little girls grow up to be big girls" indeed!

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, PLEASE WELCOME:

Um, Wow.

Last known photo of John and Paul together.  Mar '74, photo by May Pang

“It was during the Harry Nilsson [Pussy Cat]  sessions… All of a sudden I looked up and said, “Paul?” John turned around and said, “Oh, hello, Paul.” It was like they’d seen each other just the night before. John hadn’t seen him in a couple of years at that point. Then Paul’s heading to the drums; he just went to Ringo’s drum kit and started to jam. Stevie Wonder happened to drop by. Stevie’s on the electric piano, Linda’s on the Hammond B3… . Everybody was just hanging out and jamming.”
-May Pang from her book, "Instamatic Karma"

The address of this happening was 625 Palisades Beach Road, Santa Monica, a house with a history of it's own.  Owned by Louis B. Mayer in the '30's, it was later purchased by Peter Lawford.  During the Kennedy administration it was nick-named "The Western White House" and was the stomping grounds of the Rat Pack and reportedly hosted the affair between Jack and Marilyn.

And Now, A Word From Dorothy Arzner.

In 1937, Louis B. Mayer, impressed with the way in which Miss Arzner had turned Rosalind Russell into a star in “Craig’s Wife,” talked her into an MGM contract in the hope that she could alter Joan Crawford’s no-longer-popular image.

“Joan had been a hey-hey girl and the public didn’t seem to want that anymore. But I thought I was going to direct Luise Rainer in ‘The Girl from Trieste,’ Molnar’s intimate case history of a young girl who is forced to take to the streets. I was out scouting locations when I got the news that Miss Rainer had been suspended for marrying a communist and that Joan would replace her in the movie, which was now being called ‘The Bride Wore Red.’ Right away, I knew that would be synthetic, but Mayer knelt down, with those phony tears in his eyes, and said, 'We’ll be eternally grateful to the woman who brings Crawford back.’ I never liked that man; he wasn’t honest and he didn’t keep his promises. He used to duck out the back door of his office when he saw me coming."
-New York Times, 1977

Givin' Tours And Takin' Names!

I said I would be keeping you updated on the Tour Company, so I figure it's time I file a report!

I have yet to do any advertising or marketing other than this bloggy thing, yet here's where I stand:

* In the last two weekends I have given four tours, and have five more scheduled between now and the middle of November!  Two of the five come from readers of this blog.

* My dear friend David Deluise (of TVs "Wizards of Waverly Place" and son of the late, magnificent Dom Deluise) twittered, I mean tweeted about the tour for me, and encouraged his fans to take it.

* The Tour website has only been up for 14 days and has already been viewed 367      times!

* I have filed a DBA for the company and, through the help of one of the inner circle of readers of this blog, have been connected and enrolled in the Small Business Development Center to learn more.

* My best friend Chad (the other felix) took the tour and invited a PR person who has given me a list of emails for concierge people of various LA hotels, and the aforementioned inner circle person arranged a list of emails for reporters from various business and general publications.

* I googled 'how to write a press release' but I've been scared to send one out without it being reviewed by a professional, since the last thing I want is to send out something with a format flaw and have press people dismiss me from the gate.

* My next immediate needs are, a telephone number dedicated to the tour, business cards, and fancy bi or tri-fold brochures to leave at hotels and such.

Being a complete believer in signs and the old axiom, "there are no coincidences", I had a wild day on Wednesday.

By complete happenstance, I met Sunhee and Chinhee Park, Korean-Identical Twin-Psychics.  Through chit chat, they revealed what they do, and I revealed what I was starting to do.  They got that psychic-y look in there eyes and started babbling away.  And they had nothing but fabulous things to say about the company's eminent success and they were genuinely excited that I was doing it.  They're pretty cool, check 'em out.

Then, driving home from work that evening I saw a gorgeous double rainbow in the sky.  Remarkable since it hadn't been raining where I was! (and I wasn't hallucinating, there was a picture of it in the paper the next morning)  I was stopped at a red light when I first saw it.  the second arc was pretty faint, but the main arc was bold and unbelievably vibrant.  Now the trippy part:  from my vantage point it appeared to have it's one end coming from the mid point of my tour route, and the other end coming from my house!!!

All in all, I think I'm doing the right thing...
